How to Design the Best Model Railroad in the Neighborhood
If you’ve ever gazed at the breathtaking layouts in a store window at Christmas time and wondered how on earth you could ever capture the same level of excellence, or visited a model railroad show and had your breath taken away by the amazing railroads on display, then you will understand how important it is to spend time planning and designing your model layout before you even lay a single track or put a miniature shrub in place.
Of course the first step to building any miniature masterpiece is the benchwork. Underestimate the importance of the benchwork at your peril. It must be strong enough to take the weight of the entire layout plus trains, plus scenery, without buckling under the pressure. Would you prefer to build your benchwork from scratch or would you rather have the comfort of knowing that it is fit for the purpose, by purchasing a benchwork kit.
Once you have decided on the best course of action for you, now is the time to decide upon the basic layout for your ideal railroad. Space restrictions are of course a large part of how your design will look. How many tracks do you want? Do you have easy access to every part of the track should a derailment occur? How about the overall feel of your model? Will you decide upon a smaller layout with a more detailed landscape and a smaller scale locomotive or grand and dramatic landscapes with impressive mountains and a large heavyweight train?
Whatever layout you eventually decide upon, you can be sure that you will experience the same excitement as when you watched those amazing displays in the store window or at a model train exhibition. To see your railroad come to life and watch your model train hurtle round the track has a thrill all of its own.
