Other Peoples’ Kids – Let’s Take Back the Playground!

When my youngest was about eight months old, I took my two girls swimming. All was fine until Mr. Obnoxious Six-Year-Old entered the scene. He ran around the pool, leaving toddlers spluttering in his wake, so he could splash babies in the face. His mother stood at the edge of the pool, saying, “Bobby, honey, you don’t want to do that.” (That’s probably the stupidest thing you could say to a kid. Of course he wants to do it. Sure the argument is that is better to know your neighbors mainly for security when you are away. Buy an alarm! The neighbors you trust may be the ones I will be speaking of.

My eldest daughter is just like me now and tries not to get too involved with the family type relationship with neighbors. My son-in-law on the other hand is the opposite, oil and water. Somehow they make it work. Neighbors can come in all shades and types. The information you can acquire is sometimes too much for a healthy non-biased opinion.
